I agree. In a lot of fiction stories 'bout the HorseDude he is usually called "Christiaan'' or "Kristiaan"
He's known as the Hessian, Horseman, Headless or Messiah

The film is most interesting.
I'll have to agree with what Matthew Jones stated.. it's ever so highly possible.. since the Jaeger Corps were more common up north around NJ & NY. At least, so I have been told.
The Northern Campaigns are not my stronger area of knowledge.

I still get a wild kick out of the Hessian in Tim Burton's Sleepy Hollow.
Since I do the Rev War re-enacting, I'm used to the genteel & dashing appearing Hessians. Yes... they are dashing.

Also... What is so honorable... is a fellow Continental Dragoon re-enactor that passed away recently ... & is buried now at the Sleepy Hollow cemetary. There is a little memorial on the Tallmadge's site.

All in all... What truth their be about the Horseman... he can be someone from the Jaeger Corp... or an officer on horseback... :: shrugs:: it's an awesome thought. As a dragoon, I have respect for fellow horse (troops).

In one roleplaying game a couple years ago... had the Hessian alive & well causing havoc during the war. It was most interesting how the story developed. Even with my character being a dragoon.. barely escaping for her (disguised as a man then) life! Course.. that also happened when she was defeated & captured by Hessian troops & tortured before she was handed over to a British Colonel whom she despised.

No matter how many times I see the Hessian troops on the battlefield or marching along... I always smile... & a thought in my mind of the Horseman... be he Tim Burton's rendition.. or the old classical version.

Most of my heritage is Germanic. Perhaps a 16th of my blood is Hessian. Still compiling info on my family history. Rather difficult... unfortunately.
Though... not ALL Germans came to serve with the British. One man who was a General of the Continental army was fatally wounded at the Battle of Camden. Baron Johann de Kalb... an adventure seeker & Gentleman of Fortune as some may call him. He was indeed very adventurous. I'll be in Camden this August for the 225th anniversary of that battle as we will be fighting on the actual battlefield.. something that hasn't been done since the real battle 225 years ago.. & is not done at all in the US since the battlefields are all pretty much National Parks. So.. will be interesting to fight early in the morning on a VERY haunted battlefield. Yes... it is haunted.. I've been there.. & you can REALLY feel it.

I've often dreamed of going to Sleepy Hollow to see if I can get some sort of "feeling" about the truth. I've been told that since I am a re-enactor that I have a sensative nature to the going on's of that area from during that period, during the war.
Perhaps... if God be willing... a good feel for the Horseman... Dragoon to Dragoon.. or horseman to horseman (woman actually). At the same time... pay respects to a fellow Dragoon.

The Hessian Horseman was from the state of Hessen (which is in Germany, Frankfurt is a known city of it) and was sent over by us Brits to fight the Americans. His grave is in an old Dutch church, but it is unmarked.
A suitable name might be Frederick - which would name him after one of the great militaristic leaders of his time, Frederick the Great, or Frederick Wilhelm II, one of the Kings of Prussia, which would have been the Horseman's state.
But in truth, nobody knows his name.
